Jongmyung Kim retired in 2020 as a professor at the Graduate School of Korean Studies of the Academy of Korean Studies. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. from UCLA with focuses in both Buddhist studies and Korean studies. He has published extensively in both English and Korean on a range of issues in Korean Buddhism. He published four peer-reviewed books in Korean: The Lantern Festival and the Assembly of Eight Prohibitions (2018); Korean Kings’ Buddhist Views and Statecraft (2013); Buddhist World Heritage Properties in Korea: Thoughts and Significance (2008); and Buddhist Rituals in Medieval Korea (2001). They were all products of research funding projects and the books in 2018 and 2013 were selected as excellent academic books by the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Korea. He has also published ten-plus book chapters and fifty articles, and presented eighty papers. He was a guest professor at L’École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS) and was listed on the Marquis Who’s Who in the World for a lifetime.
