Cloud-Based Translation Seminars 雲譯場
For the translation of a selected book, the Initiative committee will form dedicated translation teams, comprising the translator(s) (including Principal and secondary translators), proofreader(s), translation editor(s) (to join later), and the original author (if available to participate). The translation teams function as independent, “Cloud-based Translation Seminars” (Yun yichang 雲譯場), serving both as operational units for the project and as collaborative platforms for exchanging ideas and feedback. Regular online meetings for the cloud-based translation seminars will be held to review and discuss completed translations, addressing linguistic accuracy, stylistic consistency, terminological choices, translation strategies, annotation conventions, and the scholarly positioning of the work. The forum may also include prospective translators and proofreaders within reasonable limits.
All team members are subject to evaluation processes to ensure their suitability for contributions to other book translations within the Baiqian Initiative. Performance assessments, grounded in direct observation and peer feedback, will focus on maintaining high standards of professional competence, scholarly rigor, and a collaborative attitude, while also fostering ongoing professional growth and continuous improvement.
Given the long-term scope of this initiative, ongoing recruitment will be essential to maintain continuous support. Shortlisted candidates may be invited to participate in existing translation seminars beyond their assigned projects, engaging in seminar-style discussions. Additionally, a select group of interested scholars may be invited to join these forums to foster scholarly exchange and promote international collaboration, thereby enriching the project’s academic and cultural dialogue.
Initially, meetings are recommended every two to three weeks to establish consensus, develop shared standards, and make necessary adjustments. After approximately three months, as the workflow stabilizes, the frequency can be reduced to once a month to maintain efficient collaboration. Beyond project management, the cloud-based seminar plays a crucial role in ensuring translation quality and consistency, enabling real-time problem-solving, and minimizing revision costs. More importantly, it cultivates an academic community where translators, proofreaders, and editors can engage in sustained interaction, mutual learning, and methodological development—ultimately supporting high-quality translation outputs and contributing to the professional training and development within the field of Sinology.
