About the Initiative:
The Baiqian Initiative based in Peking University is proud to announce a prestigious international initiative: the translation of a diverse collection of 1,000 major Chinese academic works into English. This long-term, multi-year project aims to make seminal Chinese scholarship accessible to English-speaking audiences, spanning philosophy, history, religion, art history, and other humanities disciplines.

 

Position Overview:
We are seeking qualified translators with demonstrated experience in academic translation to contribute to this landmark project. Translators will be responsible for producing high-quality English versions of selected Chinese scholarly works, ensuring accuracy, stylistic consistency, and readability for an international scholarly audience.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Translate complex academic texts from Chinese to English, maintaining fidelity to the original content while ensuring clarity and accessibility.
  • Collaborate with project editors, proofreaders, and fellow translators in team-based translation workflows.
  • Participate in periodic online translation seminars (Yun Yichang 雲譯場) for discussion, review, and quality assurance.
  • Uphold international scholarly standards in translation, annotation, and textual presentation.

 

Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in translating academic or scholarly texts from Chinese to English.
  • Strong command of both Classical and Modern Chinese, as well as academic English writing.
  • Familiarity with humanities disciplines, particularly philosophy, history, religion, or art history, is preferred.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a long-term, multi-institutional project environment.

Proofreader Recruitment Notice “Peking University Baiqian Initiative”

 

I. Project Overview

The Baiqian Initiative (“Peking University Centennial 1000-Volume English Translation Project”), initiated by Peking University, aims to identify and translate one thousand landmark works in the humanities written in modern Chinese over the past century. The project seeks to promote the global dissemination of Chinese scholarship and foster meaningful international academic dialogue.

The project is scheduled to officially launch in early 2026, with the first five years serving as a pilot phase to establish a standardized, professional, and internationally oriented translation and review framework.

 

II. Position Available

III. Responsibilities

Selected proofreaders will play a key academic support role in the translation process. Primary responsibilities include:

  • Within one month of project commencement, collating and critically proofreading the original Chinese text and preparing a clean, translation-ready Word version;
  • Compiling and editing a glossary of specialized terminology from the original work;
  • Providing accurate modern Chinese explanations or paraphrases of technical passages, particularly those written in classical Chinese, semi-classical Chinese, or otherwise highly specialized academic language;
  • Collaborating with translators (and, when necessary, original authors) to review English drafts, with particular attention to academic concepts, terminology, citations, and overall accuracy.

 

IV. Qualifications

  • Strong reading proficiency in both modern and classical Chinese;
  • Excellent academic English reading comprehension;
  • Familiarity with at least one humanities discipline (e.g., history, philosophy, religious studies, art history, literature);
  • Demonstrated awareness of academic standards and ability to work collaboratively;
  • Prior experience in textual collation, annotation, academic editing, or scholarly translation preferred.

 

V. Compensation and Support

  • Competitive remuneration commensurate with workload and experience;
  • Outstanding participants may have opportunities to join international academic exchange programs supported by the project and its partner institutions in Europe and North America;
  • The project will provide necessary training and standardized working guidelines.
