The Baiqian Initiative will publish its translations in partnership with Brill under the series One Thousand Books in a Century: Peking University’s Academic Classics Translation Project (北京大學百年千冊學術經典外譯) (OTBC), coedited by Ru Zhan 湛如 and Jinhua Chen 陳金華.
Conceived as a long-term flagship initiative, the series aims to present authoritative English translations of major Chinese academic classics to a global readership, ensuring both scholarly rigor and international accessibility.
The series, titled Brill-PekingU OTBC Series, is organized into five thematic sub-series reflecting the breadth of Chinese scholarship.
An Open Access plan will be implemented in accordance with the Initiative’s access framework, expanding global availability and enhancing the long-term impact of translated volumes.
Phase I (2026–2028) will launch with a carefully selected list of foundational works, establishing academic standards and editorial models for subsequent phases. All volumes will adhere to the style sheet of the Hualin International Journal of Buddhist Studies and follow the project’s official Translator Guidelines to ensure consistency in format, annotation, citation, and terminology.
In addition, the project will be accompanied by its dedicated journal, Xin Hanxue 新漢學 [Neo-Sinology], which will serve as an intellectual forum for translation studies, methodological reflection, and broader discussions in global Sinology.
