The Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, University of Oxford, and Yin-Cheng Buddhist Studies Network, in collaboration with the London Buddhist Vihara and the American Buddhist Study Center, are pleased to announce a two-day conference, Asian-Global Networks and Relationships in the Modern Spread of Buddhism, to be held on Tuesday, 30 June and Wednesday, 1 July 2026 at Rewley House, the University of Oxford.

This conference celebrates 100 years since the founding of the London Buddhist Vihara, the first Buddhist temple in the UK, the 75th Anniversary of the American Buddhist Study Center (ABSC) of New York, and the 60th Anniversary of the founding of Tzu Chi, all coinciding in 2026.

Papers are welcome on any network/s or relationship/s between Asian organisations or individuals and partners worldwide that were significant for the modern spread of Buddhism. Here we seek to move away from narratives about lone individuals and emphasise connectivity and collaborations. Please submit your 300-word proposal, and 150-word bio, to Pyi.Kyaw@ames.ox.ac.uk by Tuesday 31 March 2026.

All associated costs, including accommodation and meals, during the conference, will be covered by the conference organizers. Depending on the funds available, travel expenses for graduate students and early career researchers may also be partially or fully covered. Please state with your proposal any travel support requested, or if you would prefer to give your paper remotely. The anticipated time slot for each paper is 20 minutes. Selected conference papers will be published in the Yin-Cheng Journal of Contemporary Buddhism.
