Baiqian Database for Technical Terminology Standards
II. Implementation Strategy and Phased Plan
Phase I: Infrastructure and Terminology Compilation (Years 1–2)
Launch a high-frequency terminology integration initiative: conduct word-frequency and semantic classification analysis of translated works; identify interdisciplinary high-frequency terms; combine manual annotation and contextual analysis to establish a draft terminology repository. Steps include:
- Corpus processing and N-gram frequency analysis of Chinese source texts and translations (cf. the Chinese Buddhist Canonical Attributions database: https://dazangthings.nz/cbc/).
- Disciplinary classification and expert review for manual selection and annotation.
- Variant translation comparison and extraction of translation examples to build a historical version-tracking system.
- Establishing collaborative term-building and review mechanisms to promote academic participation and consensus.
Additional tasks:
- Form a terminology standards working group and initially select 3,000–5,000 core terms.
- Develop a corpus analysis framework and annotate terminology in translated works.
- Design and launch an OITD prototype platform with entry search, contextual examples, and translation discussion features.
- Assemble technical and academic teams with clearly defined responsibilities (technical development, lexical research, standards review).
Phase II: Database Development and Multilingual Expansion (Years 2–3)
- Systematically organize translated and source corpora with aligned segments and terminology tagging.
- Establish version control and variant comparison systems to support comparative analysis and annotation writing.
- Integrate AI-based applications.
- Compile and publish discipline-specific terminology dictionaries (e.g., trial editions of An English Dictionary of Chinese Buddhist Studies, An English Dictionary of Chinese Historiography, An English Dictionary of Chinese Philosophy).
Phase III: Platform Opening, Pedagogical Outreach, and International Collaboration (Year 4 onward)
- Fully open the platform to international academia and educational institutions, supporting API integration and scholarly interoperability.
- Launch a “Cloud Academy” teaching module offering translation training and corpus application courses.
- Establish crowdsourced entry-editing and translator community review mechanisms to foster a collaborative academic ecosystem.
- Invite international partners to co-develop multilingual editions, expanding into French, German, Japanese, and Korean translation resources.
