VII. Long-Term Vision
The significance of this project extends beyond providing technical and institutional support for the Baiqian Translation Initiative. More fundamentally, it seeks to establish a sustainable knowledge infrastructure that operates continuously, circulates across languages, and is shared across disciplines. Its far-reaching impact may be elaborated from the following perspectives:
(1) An Institutional Bridge for the International Dissemination of Chinese Scholarship
At present, the visibility and citability of Chinese academic achievements in the international scholarly community are often constrained by inconsistent terminology, uneven translation quality, and fragmented corpus resources. By establishing a standardized terminology system and a bilingual corpus platform, this project enhances the stability and traceability of key concept translations, thereby lowering barriers to cross-cultural understanding. In the long run, this will bring about three major transformations:
- First, enhancing scholarly citability: Stable English translations of key terms and searchable corpora will facilitate international scholars’ engagement with and citation of Chinese intellectual traditions and research outcomes.
- Second, promoting conceptual dialogue: Through semantic networks and mechanisms for comparing variant translations, Chinese concepts can more precisely interface with Western theoretical frameworks, rather than being oversimplified or misinterpreted.
- Third, establishing consensus-building mechanisms in translation: The translation model will gradually shift from being driven by individual translators to a platform- and community-based mode of collaborative knowledge production.
(2) Advancing Digital Humanities and AI-Empowered Research
Supported by the methodologies of Digital Humanities (DH), this platform will function not merely as a data repository but as an intelligent research tool capable of analysis, visualization, and inference. Through paragraph-level aligned corpora and terminology annotation systems, it will enable:
- Diachronic analysis of conceptual evolution;
- Comparative studies of semantic differences among various translations;
- Quantitative research on cross-disciplinary lexical usage patterns;
- AI-assisted terminology classification and contextual inference.
Such technological integration will expand the study of Chinese thought beyond traditional textual interpretation toward data-driven knowledge analysis, providing methodological innovation for future cross-linguistic, cross-cultural, and cross-temporal research.
(3) Building a Global Network for Collaborative Knowledge Creation
The platform’s open architecture and crowdsourcing mechanisms signify that its development is not a closed project but a continuously expanding scholarly ecosystem. Through API interfaces and the co-construction of multilingual editions, it may foster:
- Terminology review mechanisms involving transnational scholars;
- Corresponding dictionaries and conceptual comparison tables across different languages;
- Shared translation and corpus-based teaching modules among international universities;
- Innovative applications co-developed by AI engineers and humanities scholars.
In this way, Chinese scholarship will no longer be merely an object of translation, but an active participant and contributor of concepts within the global knowledge system.
(4) A Strategic Infrastructure for the Globalization of Chinese Intellectual Resources
From a broader perspective, the platform holds infrastructural significance. Just as printing technology and library systems underpinned the dissemination of knowledge in the modern era, digital corpus platforms and standardized terminology systems will serve as pivotal foundations for academic globalization in the twenty-first century. Its strategic value lies in:
- The long-term preservation and standardized management of Chinese intellectual resources;
- The establishment of a sustainably updated global index system for Chinese scholarship;
- Enhancing the visibility and discursive influence of Chinese academia within international evaluative frameworks;
- Laying the technical and lexical groundwork for expansion into additional languages (such as French, German, Spanish, Arabic, and others).
Ultimately, this platform will not merely function as a supporting translation initiative, but as an integrated knowledge hub linking tradition and modernity, China and the world, the humanities and technology. What it carries forward is not only the translation of texts, but the cross-cultural regeneration of ideas and the possibility of their global sharing.
