這一田野考察將鎖定在河北和河南省幾處現存的留有石刻經文和造像的北朝石窟遺址，包括響堂山、小南海、香泉寺、媧皇宮以及鄴城地區的八會寺。現場收集的數據可以與許多敦煌抄本文獻相聯系。我們將特別關注文獻、石刻和造像與“十地論”的發展與傳播之間的關聯，從歷史、哲學、信仰、儀軌、制度、社會和政治角度出發，以期更具創造性地重塑一個對中國唐朝以前佛教的更完善的認識。
我們將在河南省的響堂山、小南海和少林寺進行田野考察，之後將召開有關北朝十地經論的研討會。
這一項目將協助和引領田野考察對石窟進行研究。我們將召開研討會，參與人員將對研究發現的出版進行審核。
