One Thousand Books in a Century: Peking University’s Academic Classics Translation Project

 

Main Components

 

(1) Translation of Academic Classics

Translation constitutes the core of the Baiqian Project, yet its objectives extend beyond linguistic conversion alone. Each selected work is treated as a comprehensive scholarly endeavor. Translators are expected to grasp fully the intellectual context, theoretical framework, and academic significance of the original text, ensuring that the English translation is both faithful to the source and accessible within international scholarly discourse.

For works of substantial length, high complexity, or dense technical terminology, the project advocates a team-based translation model, bringing together translators, proofreaders, and editors to ensure accuracy, consistency, and scholarly rigor.

 

(2) The Baiqian Project International Exchange Program

The Baiqian Project does not regard translation as an isolated activity, but rather, situates it within a broader framework of academic collaboration and talent development. To this end, it has established the Baiqian Project International Exchange Program, which places translation at its core while integrating research, training, and institutional support, with the aim of building a stable and long-term global network for Sinological studies.

The International Exchange Program includes the following key components:

  1. Two-Way Early-Career Visiting Scholar Program
    Doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers participating in the Baiqian Project are supported in undertaking short- or medium-term visits between China, Europe, and North America. These exchanges are centered on translation, editorial work, and related research activities.
  2. Two-Way Postdoctoral Research and Lead Translator Support
    Early-career Sinologists from Europe and North America are encouraged and supported to conduct postdoctoral or visiting research at Peking University or partner institutions, while serving as lead or core translators for Baiqian Project volumes. Correspondingly, young Chinese scholars are supported in undertaking research and translation work at overseas partner institutions, strengthening their international academic training.
  3. Institutional and Administrative Support for Partner Universities
    Where conditions permit, the project provides administrative and institutional support to participating overseas universities to help establish local coordination and management mechanisms, ensuring the long-term continuity and stability of translation and exchange activities.
  4. Post-Translation Editing and Indexing Support
    For partner institutions with appropriate scholarly capacity, the project offers funding support for academic copyediting, revisions, and the systematic compilation of indices, all in accordance with international academic publishing standards. This support thereby enhances the usability, scholarly value, and longevity of translated volumes.
